The Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) code allows the NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) listener to receive severe warnings, watches and statements for only the county in which they live and not information for adjacent counties. SAME is also used in the Emergency Alert System (EAS).
When an NWS office broadcasts a warning, watch or non-weather emergency, it also broadcasts a digital SAME code. This SAME code contains the type of message, county(s) affected, and message expiration time. NWRs detect this digital-over-audio protocol and limits alarms to only those warnings in the broadcast area which the listener is located. (This system was later adopted by the Emergency Alert System, the replacement for the earlier Emergency Broadcast System and even earlier CONELRAD, now required by the FCC for broadcast stations.) The listener will hear the 1050 Hz warning alarm tone as an attention signal, followed by the broadcast message. At the end of the broadcast message, listeners will hear a brief digital end-of-message static burst followed by a resumption of the NWR broadcast cycle.
All current and older model NOAA Weather Radio receivers will continue to receive all of the information from the National Weather Service, but only the weather radios with SAME code capability can be programmed to receive just information for specific counties. These receivers are available at local electronics stores.
To program NWR SAME receivers with the proper county(s) and marine area(s) of choice, you need to know the 6-digit SAME code number(s) for that county(s). Once you have the number, follow the directions supplied the manufacturer of your NWR SAME receiver for programming. Below is a list of SAME codes for Kentucky Counties. Other locations may be obtained online using the United States and Territories Table or by telephone at 1-888-NWR-SAME (1-888-697-7263).
