B.A.R.S. Promotion for New Members
In April, 100 postcards like the one at the right were mailed to new hams around the Bullitt County and Louisville area. The idea is to introduce our club and invite them to join us on Field Day. For those who join the club, they can get the remainer of this year's dues free with the payment of dues for 2009. This offer is also extended on KY4KY.com whereby anyone can print out the card and bring it to the club for the same offer. We hope this will encourage new hams to drop by, see what we're all about, and hopefully join us in the fun.
Sponsorship of a Kentucky Amateur Radio Scholarship
There are no Amateur Radio scholarships representing Kentucky, but it was propsed we change that. If we could coordinate clubs to contribute some amount per year for several years a program could be established. The scholarship would go to a ham licensed in the commonwealth of Kentucky. As of May, the Central KY Amateur Radio Club (Campbellsville) returned our email with word of mouth that others are willing to support the venture. Much more will be discussed in the future.
Field Day is Getting Closer
Another Field Day is almost upon us. we're hoping to have the Red Cross ECRV with us to run a 2F station. If not, we will run a 2A. We could also do 3A for part of the day. Handlers and dogs of the Jefferson County Search Dog Association also plan on joining us with some possible demonstrations. In May, our program was about efficient operating and using the N3FJP logging software.
Repeater Committee Members
The KY4KY Repeater Committee consists of four members: Joe Pollock K4ULW, Tom Kruer AE4NU, Dave Whittle N4FND, Laddie DePas AI4RQ. Joe strongly suggested the need for a formal meeting considering the age of some of our equipment, especially the antenna.
Members Assist with the Red Cross 10k Run
Once again BARS Members assisted with the communications needs of the Red Cross 10k Run at Fort Knox. The event had 560 participants. All went smooth in the run and communications. There was good net control and it was lots of fun. The communications was organized by Stu Kratz WX4ME who thanks the 13 members who participated in operations: Dean Smith KI4EZG, Jimmy Neal AG4XL, Tom Kruer AE4NU, Mary Jo Kruer KT4GB, Bill Bland KC4OJ, Bob Grubb KA4TEV, Dorothy Simmons KD4EWS, Lex Simmons KD4EWT, Christina Simmons KC4WXO, Don Conrad N4CCJ, Joe Pollock K4ULW, Helen Pollock WB4VRP, Mike Crenshaw KF4BAP.
First Aid Class Offered
Bud Dixon KG4AFQ (Jefferson County Search Dog Association) offered the opportunity for a First Aid Class. This class takes about 3.5 hours. Plans for this will be announced in the future.
EchoLink Problems in April
There were some EchoLink problems in March. Buddy KC4WQ said he doesn't know why. He suggested a possible power failure. He plans on putting a UPS on the unit. There could also have been the possibility of 6 meters getting into it or the old power supply it has may be underpowering the radio.
Auto Signs for Communications
Signs are being looked into for use by club members when going mobile with emergency communications. The signs will state "Communications by Bullitt Amateur Radio Society" or something similar. Buddy will work up a design. This will be discussed in more detail later.
Treasurer's Report
Treasurer Don Conrad N4CCJ reported the following balances.
April: $1895.44 ($350 in the Repeater Fund)
May: $1954.44 ($384 in the Repeater Fund)
